Kiln Rental Service Terms & Conditions

By submitting work to Beechwood Pottery Studio (“BPS”) for firing, you agree to the following terms and conditions.

1. Firing Temperature & Materials

  • We currently accept Cone 6 clay bodies and glazes only.

  • Customers are responsible for providing accurate information about the clay and glazes used.

  • BPS may request information about the clay or glaze, including the product name or packaging, before accepting work.

  • We do not accept unknown or unlabelled clay or glazes.

2. Kiln Operation

  • Kilns are operated exclusively by BPS staff. Customers do not operate, program, load or unload the kiln.

  • BPS staff will determine how work is loaded and the appropriate firing program.

  • BPS reserves the right to refuse any piece or material that we believe could pose a risk to the kiln, kiln shelves, other work, the studio or staff.

3. Size & Preparing Work for Firing

Our kiln has a 24" internal depth and the shelf diameter is 11”. To allow for safe loading and adequate clearance:

  • For standard kiln shelf rentals, we accept pieces up to 8" tall.

  • Pieces taller than 8" will only be accepted when the customer rents the entire kiln.

  • All work must be completely dry before being submitted.

  • No glaze may be present on the bottom of a piece.

  • All glazed surfaces must be at least ¼" from the foot/base of the piece to prevent glaze from coming into contact with kiln shelves.

  • BPS may refuse to fire pieces that are improperly prepared, excessively thick, cracked, wet, or otherwise appear unsafe to fire.

4. Risks of Ceramic Firing

Ceramic firing involves inherent risks, and firing results cannot be guaranteed. Pieces may crack, warp, bloating, break, or otherwise change during firing. Glazes may also produce unexpected results, including variations in colour, texture, finish or surface appearance.

BPS is not responsible for damage or defects resulting from the clay, glaze, construction, thickness, moisture content or other characteristics of the customer's work.

5. Damage to Kiln & Equipment

Customers are responsible for any damage to kiln shelves, kiln furniture, elements or other studio equipment caused by their work or materials.

This includes, but is not limited to, damage caused by glaze running onto kiln shelves or the use of unsuitable clay, glaze or other materials.

Repair or replacement costs will be charged to the customer. BPS will notify the customer of any damage and, where applicable, provide the associated repair or replacement cost.

6. BPS Responsibility

BPS will take reasonable care when handling and firing customer work. However, BPS is not responsible for loss or damage resulting from the normal risks of ceramic firing, kiln malfunction, power interruption or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control.

7. Acceptance of Terms

By submitting work for firing, the customer confirms that they have read and agreed to these terms and understands the inherent risks associated with ceramic firing.

BPS reserves the right to update these terms and to refuse firing services where we believe doing so would present an unreasonable risk to the studio, equipment or other customers' work.
